Key Post: Facebook

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2007/jul/25/media.newmedia

Facebook is a social media platform that serves the purpose of allowing people to connect and get to know each other via their computers, phones etc. Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

Mark Zuckerberg is more famously known for the creation of Facebook. Started Facebook in 2004, Zuckerberg did so in order fro Harvard students to get to know each other better online. Zuckerberg wanted to grow Facebook even more so he hired his friend Edward Saverin to work on the business side of things and brought Dustin Moskovitz on as a programmer. According to an article by thought.com "he named the site after the directories that were handed out to the university students to help them to get to know one another better."

Later on in 2004, Facebook kept growing very fast and they brought on the founder of Napster and Angel Investor "Sean Parker" who became the Facebook president and famously changed Facebook from what was at the beginning called "The Facebook".

The circumstances were Mark Zuckerberg and Edwardo Saverin were roommates his junior year at Harvard when they decided to invent Facebook.

The problem mark was trying to solve was how there was no online presences or way of communicated through people online. Facebooks goal was to fix this problem. before Facebook, if you wanted to get into contact with someone you had to use a telephone and if you did not have their number their was no way of reaching them. With Facebook, all you had to do was an online search and you could find someone and connect with them here. On Facebook you can see what someone posts, if they're in a relationship, the people they follow on Facebook etc. This social media platform gave millions of people easy access into connected with anyone they wanted to via online.

The invention changed our world deeply. Facebook was the first popular social media platform. This website opened up the doors for more popular and arguably better websites that are similar to Facebook such as Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok etc. where you are able to connect with millions of people via online. The main way it changed the world was once again being able to connect with people that you wouldn't normally be able to. My dad has told me many stories abut how "back in his day" if someone in his high school moved away, there was practically no way of communicating with them. It was as if they did not exist anymore. With Facebook, it completely changes that issue for the better. To a degree I also think Facebook solved human connections outside of face to face interaction. Even though you should be talking to someone in real life if you can, Facebook allows to to communicate via online which was a huge deal in 2004.

I think there are many negative effects of Facebook but overall it is a positive thing. I think the biggest negative with Facebook is that it has allowed people to become chronically online when prior to Facebook you actually had to meet people in real life rather than being lazy and just trying to connect with someone over your computer or phone. Facebook also gives a platform for cyberbullying. people can message harmful and mean things to people which could lead to a downgrade of ones mental health and well being.

Blog Post 2: Supreme Court Reading Analysis Questions

United States Supreme Court Building - Wikipedia

I learned multiple things about the Supreme Court that I did not previously know about. Although I knew previously that the Supreme Court had jurisdiction over all laws within the United States, I did not know that the Supreme Court had the power to check the actions of the other two branches of government (executive and legislative branches). There were also multiple Supreme Court cases that I did not know about prior to this article. Them being 1962's Angel v Vitale and Dred Scott v Sanford which were tow major Supreme Court cases. One of them involving citizenship to African American slaves and the other about preyer in schools potentially violating the first amendment.

The most important takeaway from the Supreme Court is that they have an immense amount of power. The Supreme Court is the highest form of justice that we have in this country and has the power to overrun cases if they deem necessary. There have been very many Supreme Court cases that shape the way we live today and without these major courses American society would be very different. As a whole, I got from the article that the Supreme Court has a vital part in American History and it will continue to be important in the many years of this country moving forwards.

The most surpassing thing I learned in this article was the "Texas v Johnson" Supreme Court case of 1989. This Supreme Court case was about if it should be illegal to burn the U.S flag and "other potenially offensive speech". I didn't think this would need a court case to figure it out. Even though I don't think it is morally right say hateful things or to burn down the American flag, I thought that it would be self explanatory that doing these things would in fact be protected by the first amendment

Top 5 News Outlets

  1. ESPN https://www.espn.com/

ESPN

This is probably my most used media outlet. I am a very big sports fan and this is where I am able to get all of my new information regarding sports, my favorite teams, players etc. What I love most about this website is how versatile it is. I can information about many different sports, and there's especially a lot regarding my two favorite sports, basketball and football. I can also get perspectives from different coaches and players about certain things. An example of this would St. Johns basketball Coach Rick Patino, in a press conference talking about why he hasn't enjoyed coaching this year. Information like this along with the actual games is what makes ESPN such a great place to get information regarding sports.

2. Fox News https://www.foxnews.com/

Tucker Carlson is leaving Fox News

Fox is one of the few news media outlets that I listen to and get information from. Fox revolves around talking political and societal issues and they have a lot of new and fresh information constantly be put out. This media outlet is very much right leaning and I feel as if it is very biased politically. Even thought this may be the case, I still like getting my information from here because there are very few other popular right leaning news outlets.

3. CNN https://www.cnn.com/

CNN - YouTube

CNN, like fox is one of the few news media outlets that I listen to and acquire information from. CNN revolves around talking about politcal and societal issues going on primarily in the United States. when I was in middle school our class used to watch "CNN 10" which I thought was very informative because it gave a 10 minute highlight of the major events going on in the U.S. Since watching these videos I've enjoyed airing knowledge from this platform. I like getting my information from CNN as well as Fox because they represent two different side of the political coin.

4. Instagram https://www.instagram.com/

Instagram - Wikipedia

Instagram is a media outlet where I get a lot of my information from. Instagram is my most used app and it will probably stay like that for a multitude of reason. This app is extremely versatile. I can get news about politics, sports, movies, celebrity news etc. On this app you can pretty much look up any account or see anything that you want to, whatever that may be.

5. Google news https://news.google.com/home?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en

File:Google news logo.png - Wikipedia

Growing up, I didn't really use google news at all. I never really took the time to reproach certain things but now as ive gotten older I use this outlet more often and I find it to be very valuable. google news gives information of all sorts but it is very politically focused. I feel like I can get a lot more information here than most media outlets and ill I have to do is a quick search to get what I want.
